Engagement rate

Engagement rate is the ratio of interactions like likes, comments, shares, and saves to total followers or impressions on a piece of content.

Engagement rate tells you how much your audience actually cares about your content. A creator with 10,000 highly engaged followers is often more valuable (to brands and for sales) than one with 1 million passive followers.

How to calculate it

Engagement rate = (Total interactions / Total followers) ร— 100

For example: 500 likes + 50 comments on a post, with 10,000 followers = 5.5% engagement rate.

Benchmarks by platform

  • Instagram: 1-3% is average, 3-6% is good, 6%+ is excellent
  • LinkedIn: 2-4% is good for personal profiles
  • X/Twitter: 0.5-1% is average, 2%+ is strong
  • YouTube: Measured differently โ€” focus on watch time and CTR

Why it matters

High engagement rates signal trust and influence. Brands increasingly value engagement over follower count. The algorithm also rewards content with strong engagement by showing it to more people.
